I. Sanctify Him
I. Sanctify Him
1 Oh, give thanks to the Lord! Call upon His name; Make known His deeds among the peoples!
It is such a thankful thing in being able to call on the name of the Lord! That He would even have a thought towards us! What good it is to know that the Creator of all things would look down on a single individual and have thoughts toward them. Not just thoughts but actions! How many times has the Lord rescued? How many times has the Lord comforted? How many times has the Lord picked up? His deeds are great and faithful. We who have known this great and wonderful experience must not be bashful about His marvelous works but should exalt His wondrous works to the top of every conversation.
II. Sing to Him
II. Sing to Him
2 Sing to Him, sing psalms to Him; Talk of all His wondrous works!
When we begin thinking of all the wonderful things that the Lord has done it is hard not to begin singing a melodious hymn! Even in the middle of despair if one would quit focusing on all the things that are going wrong and look to the One that is always right, then if we aren’t careful we will be singing praises to Him instead of self-loathing complaints to ourselves! It reminds me of two men who had been beaten and thrown into a jail cell awaiting execution.
23 And when they had laid many stripes on them, they threw them into prison, commanding the jailer to keep them securely.
24 Having received such a charge, he put them into the inner prison and fastened their feet in the stocks.
25 But at midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the prisoners were listening to them.
26 Suddenly there was a great earthquake, so that the foundations of the prison were shaken; and immediately all the doors were opened and everyone’s chains were loosed.
Psalms are not simply songs but words of worship that are meant to be sacred or saved for only reverent practice. If we turn our words from whining to worship then everything around us can start changing and we will see the chains and doors of our captivity begin unlocking and swinging open!
One night a fierce desert storm struck with rain, hail, and high wind. At daybreak, feeling sick and fearing what he might find, Samuel went to survey their loss. The hail had beaten the garden and truck patch into the ground; the house was partially unroofed; the henhouse had blown away, and dead chickens were scattered about. Destruction and devastation were everywhere. While standing dazed, evaluating the mess and wondering about the future, he heard a stirring in the lumber pile that was the remains of the henhouse. A rooster was climbing up through the debris, and he didn’t stop climbing until he had mounted the highest board in the pile. That old rooster was dripping wet, and most of his feathers were blown away. But as the sun came over the eastern horizon, he flapped his bony wings and proudly crowed. That old, wet, bare rooster could still crow when he saw the morning sun. And like that rooster, our world may be falling apart, we may have lost everything, but if we trust in God, we’ll be able to see the light of God’s goodness, pick ourselves out of the rubble, and sing the Lord’s praise.
III. Seek Him
III. Seek Him
3 Glory in His holy name; Let the hearts of those rejoice who seek the Lord!
4 Seek the Lord and His strength; Seek His face evermore!
We glory in the only name given in which we may be saved! There is no other name that should stir the hearts of God’s people than that of Jesus! If He truly rules in our life and is the source of all of our affection and life itself than just the mention of His name should cause us to become spurred up. We find here a great trinity, SEEK! We seek the Lord’s salvation. We seek the Lord’s great strength. We seek the Lord’s warm comfort of His shining face. Seek, seek, seek and because of the Lord’s promise we will find, find, find! We not only find promise we find purpose.
7 “Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you.
8 For everyone who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened.
9 Or what man is there among you who, if his son asks for bread, will give him a stone?
10 Or if he asks for a fish, will he give him a serpent?
11 If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask Him!
WE ARE HIS CHILDREN! Even if i messed up? YES! Even the dumb ones like us!
IV. Sentimentalize Him
IV. Sentimentalize Him
5 Remember His marvelous works which He has done, His wonders, and the judgments of His mouth,
How quickly we forget the wondrous works of God! We go from words of affirmation to words that are absent in the blink of an eye. We do a great disservice to ourselves and God when we forget what He has both said and done. Not only a disservice but a dwindling faith. Are faith stays strong when we constantly remind ourselves of His wondrous works.
“Alas, we are far more ready to recollect foolish and evil things than to retain in our minds the glorious deeds of Jehovah.
If we would keep these in remembrance our faith would be stronger, our gratitude warmer, our devotion more fervent, and our love more intense.” (Spurgeon)
In 1636, amid the darkness of the Thirty Years’ War, a German pastor, Martin Rinkart, is said to have buried five thousand of his parishioners in one year, an average of fifteen a day. His parish was ravaged by war, death, and economic disaster. In the heart of that darkness, with the cries of fear outside his window, he sat down and wrote this table grace for his children:
Now thank we all our God
With heart and hands and voices;
Who wondrous things hath done,
In whom his world rejoices.
Who, from our mother’s arms,
Hath led us on our way
With countless gifts of love
And still is ours today.
Here was a man who knew thanksgiving comes from love of God, not from outward circumstances.
